"Can YOU Tell Where the DustMag Ends!?"
|
The massive task of keeping down the dust on the Goldfields Gas Pipeline project has gone to specialist firm RainStorm Dust Control.
As well as dealing with the extremes of terrain that turns from choking dust to impenetrable mud after any rain, RainStorm will use DustMag to stabilise the access roads. The company is also treating the temporary worker camps established along the pipeline route for major contractor Saipem.
The choice of DustMag for the project follows the carrying out of a special environmental study to ensure that there would be no deleterious effect on the regrowth of vegetation in the fragile environment. Managing director Roy McInnes agrees that the project -- considered the biggest dust control job ever undertaken in Australia -- is a breakthrough for the company.
While DustMag has been widely used on mine sites, quarries and rural roads over the last couple of years since its introduction to WA, McInnes says it has been a revelation to many of the imported workers on the project. "Guys on the pipeline keep commenting to us, God, this stuff really works. We've tried everything else and none of it's any good'."
RainStorm has treated some 200km of the pipeline easement and access roads since it began work in August. The company is using 2 triple road trains on an as needed basis to deliver and apply the dust suppressant. McInnes considers that the decision to engage RainStorm would have been straightforward. "We are the only alternative," he says. "Our only competitor is water, and they've got limited supplies out there. Water is a lot more expensive and less effective anyway."

DUSTMAG DUST SUPPRESSANT
CONSTRUCTION SIDE TRACK TRIAL SECTION
Cranbrook Shire Council were contracted by Main Roads WA Great Southern Region to assist with the reconstruction of a 3.20 kilometre section of Albany Highway (Paul Valley section) in 1995/96.
This project necessitated side-tracking of highway traffic over the period 6 January, 1996 to 4 April, 1996. Highway traffic volumes average 1500 vehicles per day.
The unsealed side track pavement material was locally sourced laterite gravel material with PI nominally 3. In order to reduce requirement to water sidetrack surface to reduce dust visibility concerns (and inherent pavement loss and conflict between side track traffic and maintenance water trucks) it was decided to investigate three stabilisation agents. Of these three agents, the DustMag product proved to be the most effective by far (the sided track required no watering or grading for the three month dry season project duration) was the least cost and, as it was applied as a surface treatment from the supplier's truck, was by far the easiest to apply.
Untreated control sections required maintenance watering between 1 and 2 times per day.
I would recommend that the product be again used in similar situations to the one outlined above.
Yours faithfully,
P G Robertson C.P. Eng.

CITY'S INNOVATION REWARDED!
MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE STABILISED LIMESTONE
The City of Wanneroo Operations Services unit has set a precedent in Western Australia by becoming the first local government to receive an award in the prestigious Case Earth Award Competition.
On 10th September, Mr Phil Calley, Mr Harminder Singh, and Mr John Wong of Operations Services accepted a "High Commendation" Award in this competition for the development of a bitumen sealed magnesium chloride stabilisation technique.
The awards recognise civil engineering contractors that possess the skills and ingenuity to conceive and develop innovative solutions to complex engineering problems that require delicate environmental protection and management practices.
The Operations Unit not only undertakes most City of Wanneroo road construction projects, but is also a prime contractor to the City of Joondalup, and will be undertaking major civil road construction works valued in excess of $2.5 million for that local authority over the next 2 years.
Director of Technical Operations Mr Dennis Blair said that the Operations Services team were very worthy of the award as they are committed to actively developing innovative management and construction practices.
"The efforts of the Operations Services Unit in its research and development of innovative systems has resulted in this quality road building technique that is environmentally friendly and cost effective for specific road pavements."
The innovation has proved so successful that the City has committed to upgrade a section of Nisa Road in Pinjar to a sealed pavement using this technique.
"This would not have been financially possible without the significantly lower construction cost provided by the magnesium chloride stabilising technique." Mr Blair said.

Dear Roy
In regard to your supplying and spraying of DustMag for trial at Kambalda on the 1st of October 1996, we are happy to advise:
1/ Product has been down for 6 months as of 1st of April 1997.
2/ Traffic of the trial area is always busy (7 days per week) ranging from light vehicles to 110 tonne pay load semis and triple road trains with a total laden weight in excess of 175 tonne.
3/ Dust suppression was total.
4/ The surface trialed produced a non slip roadway.
5/ Treated section was not affected by rain, and did not go sloppy.
6/ The section was not at all watered until early autumn rains in early April.
7/ The treated section has not yet been graded although now due to be.
8/ We estimate a cost saving in excess of 75% compared to conventional road management.
9/ Rainstorm showed ease of application and there was proven evidence that the product does not require mixing into the road surface which is constructed with material having a high clay content.
BGC Contracting would not hesitate to use the Rainstorm product in any off highway dust suppression requirement.
Yours faithfully
BGC Contracting
